Technical Tips Eliminator® H-Type® Precleaner
Tip: Identifying the causes of cleaner blade chatter on the belt
Problem: Occasionally an HF or HV Precleaner may chatter as it cleans against the belt. Chatter is defined as a constant, repeating movement of the cleaner tips on the belt. This rapid skipping-type action will decrease cleaning efficiency and can lead to other cleaner problems. Blade chatter can have several causes:
- Incorrect cleaner location
- Incorrect tensioning of the cleaner
- A poor vulcanized splice that is starting to lift (with HV cleaner)
- Damaged top cover or a belt that is in bad condition
- Extremely dry material running on the belt
- Damaged lagging or an out-of-round pulley.
Solution: If chatter occurs, start your inspection with the cleaner. Check its location. Refer to the installation instructions and insure that the x and y location specs were used correctly. It may be necessary to move the cleaner pole back under the head pulley approximately 1" to solve the problem. Next check the blade tension. If the tension is too light that may be the problem. Make any necessary tension adjustments. Inspect the belt. Are any splices lifting or in poor condition? If so, change the splice. If it is a bad vulcanized splice, changing the HV Tips to HF Tips until the splice is changed out will help eliminate the chatter. If the material is extremely dry, add a fine water spray ahead of the cleaner. This will act as a lubricant for the tips on the belt. Finally, if the pulley lagging or an out-of-round pulley is causing the problem, the appropriate repairs should be made or a secondary cleaner could be used instead of the precleaner.
Handy Hint:
On conveyors where the blades of the HF Precleaner contact the belt outside of the material-carrying path on the belt, drop one or more tips so the blades cover just the material path. This will reduce the possibility of blade chatter and provide more consistent, equalized blade wear across the cleaner. |
