Technical Tips Eliminator® H-Type® Precleaner
Tip: Understanding 3 important factors makes installing an H-Type Precleaner easier.
Problem: The H Precleaner is many times perceived as being hard to install. The X & Y specifications have to be measured and marked to get the pole located in the correct position. And then additional measurements or calculations need to be made to locate the mounting brackets in the right spot. It may seem complicated; and certainly not as easy as installing a secondary cleaner, where a quick measurement is taken to position the cleaner a certain distance from the belt. On top of that, many times the unique set-up of the head pulley presents more challenges.
Solution: The H Precleaner is located in a specific position on the head pulley to achieve maximum cleaning efficiency. Understanding the reasons for the positioning will help to make the job easier. There are 3 important factors for the correct installation of the H cleaner:
- Location of the blade on the head pulley
- Blade or arm heel gap
- Blade attack angle to the belt.
Location of the blade on the head pulley. This is the spot where the cleaner blades touch the belt on the head pulley. Optimally, this "correct location" is 15° below the horizontal centerline of the pulley. The X & Y coordinates specifically locate the pole to achieve this position. In some cases, conveyor structure restrictions will not allow this pole position. For those situations the blade location can be moved closer to the horizontal centerline by up to 5° (-5°) or down the pulley in a range up to 10° (+10°). Changing the location to any less than 10° on the pulley may cause excessive blade wear due to the blades being positioned up into the material flow; or more than 25¡ may result in material buildup on the cleaner blades, causing the blades to push away from the belt. Blade or arm heel gap. This is the distance between the head pulley (including the belt) and the base of the blade or arm. This gap should be in a range of 1-3/8" to 2-1/4" (35mm to 55mm). The proper gap will prevent cleaner chatter on the belt and avoid material buildup between the cleaner and the belt.
Blade attack angle. This is the angle of the blade tip to the belt. Optimally, this is a 20° angle for SS, S, & M tip sizes and 17° for the L size. As the blade wears this angle of attack will decrease, therefore it is important that the start-up attack angle is achieved. The attack angle is critical to both cleaning efficiency and cleaner/mechanical fastener compatibility.
Step-by-step directions for proper location of the precleaner are included in each cleaner carton. Following them closely and reviewing the diagrams will make the installation quick and easy.
Handy Hint: Once you have the H Precleaner installed, a quick double-check will ensure that it is in the right location. Take your tape measure and check the gap measurement. If it falls in the 1-3/8" - 2-1/4" (35mm to 55mm) range, all of the above factors have been achieved. |
