Eliminator® Secondary Belt Cleaners

Tip: Use a hold-down roller to reduce belt flap or belt cupping and improve cleaning efficiency.

Problem: Frequently conveyor belts are run either under-tensioned or over-tensioned. In either case, it presents a problem for effective belt cleaning. On a low-tensioned conveyor, the belt will flap (a repeating up-and-down action) as it comes off the head pulley. The flapping belt jumps over the belt cleaner blades, reducing the cleaning efficiency. Over-tensioning can cause the belt to cup as it moves back down the conveyor on the return side. This makes it difficult for the cleaner to conform to the belt, resulting in poor cleaning performance.

Solution: Eliminator secondary cleaners achieve maximum cleaning efficiency when they work on a stable, flat belt surface. Introducing a hold-down roller for belts that flap or have a cupping problem is the best solution. In many cases, a roller that stabilizes the belt will do the trick. This can be as simple as a return roller that is inverted and positioned against the inside of the belt. If the belt has a severe cupping problem, a heavy-duty pressure roller may be needed to put downward pressure on the belt to flatten it out. Whether using a stabilizing roller or a pressure roller, the hold-down roller should be positioned 6" to 8" behind the belt cleaner. A hold-down roller may be the simple solution that takes your belt cleaning performance from poor to excellent.

Handy Hint: For correcting a belt flap problem, a standard return roller can be used. Its purpose is to stabilize the belt and very little tension is required. For high-tension belts that cause severe belt cupping, it is recommended that a heavy-duty roller or live-shaft roller be used so that pressure can be applied to the belt to flatten it out.
